Bumble is a female friendly online dating or hookup app, almost on the lines of Tinder. (The co founder of Tinder started it). It’s perceived as woman focused because the women have to take the initiative in communicating.

Bumble has more than 12 million users with 950 matches already having been made, which is surely saying a lot for an app that’s been in business just for 2 ½ years. Women are initiating moves more than a million times each day on this app. The app claims to have started over 5000 engagements till date.

Getting Started

  • Download the app on your phone. It is available for both Android and iOS phones.
  • Use your Facebook account for getting started and creating your profile. The app pulls in all information related to name, age, job, email id, photos, relationships and so on. You can edit to control access to information. App does not post to Facebook profile
  • Upload photos and set up your profile. You can hold the photos and drag them to change the order. About me is limited to 300 words. Write about your gender, your occupation and education. You can add a maximum of 6 photos. Moderators might cut out inappropriate photos
  • Enable location service on your phone
  • Set up parameters for search filters by swiping left or right
  • You can set the BFF settings to view the intentions of other users, whether they are looking for friendship, romance, hookups and so on.

How it Works

  • It’s a typical hot or not type of hookup app
  • Use the hive icon of the application to match with others
  • You can see photos by swiping up or down and swipe right and left if you like or don’t like a profile respectively
  • When both parties like each other, it’s a match (called Bees) and the woman can initiate the conversation
  • You can also long press on photos and send it to a friend
  • In case of a male-female match, the woman has a time period of 24 hours for making a move, with the man also having an equal time for responding. Or else, the connection is cut. In case of a match between two women, anyone of them can start the conversation. The idea is to encourage people to respond quickly and move ahead with the relationship. However, you can extend this deadline once a day, except for paid members
  • You can shake the phone if you swiped left by mistake, with 3 backtracks allowed at a time. Backtracks get refilled after three hours. You can even get more backtracks by talking about Bumble on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. This is a pretty cool feature, as there are many other dating apps that will make you pay for undoing a wrong swipe.
  • Use SuperSwipe by clicking on the hart icon on the profile, but you need a BumbleCoin to do this.

Interesting Features

  • Use Bumble coins for SuperSwipe, which is similar to the SuperSwipe feature in Tinder. The pay per use feature sends a signal to a person that you want to match with them. One Bumble coin costs $1.99, and 20 coins cost $24.99.
  • You can move to the BFF mode to find friends. It allows users to swipe and match to find friends instead of dating. You will find profiles of the same sex to make friends
  • Conversations in regular Bumble mode will be in yellow for dating and will be in green in the BFF mode.
  • The profile for both the modes is the same, but the company is planning to release an option for dual profiles, where you can set it up for friendship or for dating/hookups.

Pros

  • It is a new take on online dating where women cannot be bullied, so there’s less chance for harassment or abuse and more respect for women.
  • It includes a photo verification, to make sure that users are actually who they claim to be
  • It is integrated with Facebook, so signing up is easy and information is genuine
  • Even the free version offers complete functionality
  • The 24 hour limit ensures swift action
  • Bumble strictly prohibits publishing or uploading porn material

Cons

  • You cannot make a search on your own, but only view the potential match shown by the app
  • The profiles are rather simple, so you don’t get much information about the person. You can see the age of the person; where they work; school and a short bio
  • Search filters are basic
  • Some people don’t like the idea of using Facebook for registering on the app

Paid Version – Bumble Boost

Though the app is a free, there is also a paid subscription version offering premium access. Bumble launched its paid version in the month of August last year, known as Bumble Boost. The premium option allows three major features.

  • Beeline: You can see who has liked you, so it saves the bother of swiping and matching again.
  • Rematch: Even if a match has expired (due to the 24 hours deadline), you are allowed a second try for another 24 hours
  • Busybee: Allows you unlimited number of extends
  • You get discounts if you buy the premium version for extended periods. Pay $2.99 for a week; $7.99 for a month; $5 for 3 months and $4.17 for 6 months

Bumble is a great app for hookups and no strings attached relationships. But it also offers a lot more. It is aimed at becoming an app where users can contact their best friends, business partners and so on. For instance, the Bumble BFF allows you to meet new friends in your location, whereas the Bumble Bizz can be used for business purposes.

Bottom Line

Bumble is a purely mobile app though it does have a desktop site. The app comes with a rating of 3.7 stars in the Google Play Store with a 4 star rating in the iOS App Store. Though Bumble mainly appears to be a hookup app, it offers a positive move towards gender balance on such platforms.

Women are generally finding the app cool, as they like to be in charge and initiate a contact. Bumble has managed to shake up the outdated dating rules and empowers women with its feminist-dating app.
